Performing Arts Activities
Besides its official events, Carolingia has
activities going on all the time. The following lists most of our guilds
and regular practices that focus on some sort of performing art. Most of these activities are informal and medieval garb is not required, although instrumental arts require musical instruments.
Accademia della Danza
The Accademia researches and performs pre-1600’s dance styles and forms. No prior experience is necessary, just an open mind and interest in working together to figure out these dances.
Contact: Master Justin du Coeur,
Meetings: the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month in MIT room 24-307
Mailing List: http://net.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/carolingia-dance - list is for both Accademia and Dance Practice |

Dance Practice
Dance practice meets once a week (mostly) to learn and practice the social dances we do at SCA events. The dances are varied - slow and stately to energetic, simple to moderately complex, some done with partners and some without. Dance practice is also an ongoing social gathering which offers a good place to meet people and get information about local activities. We recommend flat shoes (such as light sneakers, loafers, or dance shoes) and a willingness to have a good time.
Contact: Master Justin du Couer,
Meetings: Every Wednesday from 7:30-9:30 at MIT room 36-156
Mailing List: http://net.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/carolingia-dance - list is for both Accademia and Dance Practice |

Fools’ Guild
The Fools’ Guild of Carolingia is a vast and all-pervasive society of those in the barony who act in a foolish manner. While it is loosely organized (if you can call it organization) the guild is ready at a moment’s notice to bring mirth and levity to any otherwise overly serious or solemn occasion.

The Carolingian Guild of Musicians and Jongleurs
The guild includes two major sections, the Waytes -- the barony's dance band,
and the Quire -- the barony's singing group. Other subgroups in pursuit of
period music become active as interest dictates.
The Waytes of Carolingia
Open to all interested in playing pre-1600 music, especially dance music, in a broken (mixed-instrument) ensemble. Members are expected to have their own instruments and to know, at least basically, how to play them -- although some loaner instruments and lessons may be arrangeable. Music is provided by the Guild. Performances occur at some Carolingian and a few non-local events. The Waytes are led by their Captain, Herr Udalrich Schermer, with other officers selected by the group as needed
Contact: Herr Udalrich Schermer,
Meetings: Most Mondays, 7-8:30, at MIT - contact the Waytes leader above for the current room and building.
The Quire of Carolingia
Open to all interested in singing pre-1600, mixed-ensemble, a capella music. Ability to read music is helpful but not required. Music is provided by the Guild. Performances occur at some Carolingian and a few non-local events. The Quire has a permanent Manager, Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook, and Librarian, Signor Orlando dei Medici; directors are selected on a per-performance basis.
Contact: Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brooke,
Meetings: Most Mondays, 8:30-10 - contact the Quire leader above for the current room and building.

Mummers’ Guild
The Baron’s Troupe of Mummers includes actors and others interested in theatre of the middle ages. We have performed works from throughout the period, from mummings and masques to full texts of Shakespeare. Acting is not required for Guild membership; directors, producers, technicians, stage managers, and everyone else who helps (or would like to help) to create a show are welcome to join us. The Mummers do not meet regularly but come together when someone is inspired to produce, direct, and/or host a play at an event.
