 Martial Arts Activities

Besides its official events, Carolingia has activities going on all the time. The following lists most of our guilds and regular practices. Most of these activities are informal and medieval garb is not required, although martial arts require special equipment (which can also be borrowed from the barony).

Carolingian Armorers' Guild

People interested in the Art and Science of making practical and/or medieval-style armor.

Contact: Master Luke Knowlton,
Mailing List: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Carolingia-Armorers/
Meetings: ad hoc

Company of Bowmen

The Carolingian Company of Bowmen promotes the enjoyment and practice of archery in the Barony, studies the practices, equipment and standards of archery during the period covered by the SCA, and trains archers so they may assist in the defense of the Barony. General archery practices are held at various locations and times in the Barony and Cantons. You are not required to provide your own equipment before learning to shoot, as the Company has some practice equipment available. The Young Archers of Carolingia learn and practice the art of archery, and pop many balloons in the process.

Contact: Peter the Red,
Meetings: Every Sunday in Carlisle, MA (youth archers 2nd and 4th Sundays)

Fencing

We recreate pre-1600's rapier combat based on modern fencing as well as historical fighting manuals. We practice Sunday afternoons 2-5 and Thursday nights 7-9; please see http://www.carolingiafencing.org for up-to-date location information (or email fence-marshal@carolingia.eastkingdom.org). Newcomers are always welcome; we have free instruction and loaner gear as well as structured classes in the fall and spring. You must be 18 to fence in the East Kingdom, though plans are in the works for a youth program.

Contact: Lord Anssem van Rienen,
Meetings: Weekly

The Carolingian Pike Company

Interested in fighting but don't know where to begin? The Carolingian Pike Company can help. We have loaner armor and weapons, and will provide instruction so you can make your own. We also train novice fighters in the basics of SCA combat, both group tactics and individual tournament combat. You must be over 18 to join the Pike Company. Those under 18, please see "Youth Fighting".

Contact: Master Aleksandr Ruslanovich, called Yevsha,

Thrown Weapons

THUNK! Thrown Weapons is throwing axes, knives, spears, and other sharp pointy things at targets. No experience is needed. We have loaner weapons and are happy to teach. There is not a minimum age, but you must have parent consent, be physically large enough to handle the weapons safely, and mature enough to follow directions. Minors may throw at the marshal in charge's discretion, and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian the first time they throw. Practice is approximately twice a month, weather permitting, at Pandaulf's home in Chelmsford, MA. Email the contact below for the next date and time of practice.

Contact:Lord Pandaulf,
Meetings: Twice monthly

Youth Fighting

A group dedicated to fighting for those under 18. Additional safety measures and alternate equipment is used to allow children and teens to have the same joy of "killing" their friend that adults do.
